KELSEYVILLE — People interested in volunteering in the Kelseyville Kids” Garden at Kelseyville Elementary School are invited to attend an orientation that begins at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Attendees will learn about planting and collecting seeds, plant propogation and drip irrigation so that they might join the team of volunteers who are responsible for the Kelseyville Kids” Garden Club.

Beginning on Sept. 11, the Kelseyville Kids” Garden Club will meet twice a week, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The children range from 9 to 12 years old (fourth- and fifth-graders) and they are responsible for 22 raised beds, 13 tractor tires, an herb garden, berries along the fence line and a butterfly garden in the corner.

In the fall the children propogate cuttings from plants in their garden and maintain them in their greenhouse during the winter. In February, they will get busy planting vegetable and herb seeds for their annual spring plant sale.

Throughout the year, seasonal crops are harvested and dishes are prepared so that the children may set a table and sit down to enjoy their bounty.

Eight of the club”s best behaved, most attentive gardeners have been invited to travel on Sept. 12 to Santa Rosa for the National Heirloom Seed Exposition at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. People from all over the country will bring their most unusual heirloom seeds, plants, fruits and vegetables to be judged and shared with the public.

The exposition takes place for three days with Sept. 12 being specifically directed toward children”s activities. Helen Finch and Susan Kaufman will join the children for this event.

People who are interested in volunteering with the Kelseyville Kids” Garden Club are invited to join the volunteer team on Thursday in the garden at the elementary school, located at 5065 Konocti Road in Kelseyville. A short training/refresher course will be shared as well as ideas for the new school year. For more information, call Helen Finch at 279-9400.
