UPDATED:

Back before Pete Wilson got into office the state”s electric companies were controlled monopolies. In other words, before they could raise rates they had to get the states OK first. That helped to keep the rates down.

Then Mr. Wilson got into office and decided those monopolies should just be private “for profit” companies. So he came up with a deregulation plan. He went to all the companies and asked what they thought of his plan. They all said his plan would not work. His answer was “Get ready for it because it will be law before I leave office.”

PG.&E and the other in-state providers were forced to sell many of their power plants to, in many cases, out of state companies. And your bills started going up as they did in 100-percent of the other states that deregulated their electric companies even though their Governors said their bills would go down. When Gray Davis got into office he stopped the deregulation as best he could but the damage had been done. All of California”s electric providers are private for profit companies and we”ve got the bills to prove it!
