PETALUMA — Adrina Miller might not have been on her “A” game early, but her 10 kills and three blocks helped propel the Lower Lake Trojans past the St. Vincent Mustangs 26-24, 25-21, 25-22 in a non-league varsity volleyball match on Tuesday night in Petaluma.

It was the season debut for the Trojans (1-0) and the coaching debut of Niki Doud, who said her team took the better part of the first set to find itself on the court.

“They came out really slow,” Doud said. “By the middle of the first game they started talking and pulling together as a team. As soon as they clicked, they all started playing. Nothing hit the ground.”

Miller, who had several mishits early in the match, found her groove soon enough, according to Doud.

“She was hitting the ball long and had to adjust the way she was hitting it,” Doud said.

Miller also had three aces.

Other Lower Lake standouts were Amanda Graf with 13 service points, including three aces, and one kill; Camry Richardson with 14 service points; and Shelby Harris with two aces and three kills.

The Trojans also swept St. Vincent in the junior varsity match, winning in two games (scores not available).

At Upper Lake, the Upper Lake Cougars rallied from a double-digit deficit to win the first set, but the hard-hitting and hard-serving Middletown Mustangs roared back for a 26-28, 25-13, 25-13, 25-10 win in non-league action.

Sophie Marshall led the Mustangs (2-0) with seven kills while Renee Edwards, Brianna Ortiz and Nika Gibbs had five kills apiece. Ortiz and Aly Mino each had four aces.

Upper Lake statistics weren”t available but coach Sandy Coatney said Samantha Maddock led the team in kills.

“They did what they were supposed to do in that first game,” Coatney said. “They were focused on the next point instead of the scoreboard.”

Maddock, Kelsey Pearl and Ashley Lovrin had solid runs at the service line for Upper Lake (0-2) in the first set.

“Middletown stepped it up after that,” Coatney said.
