LAKE COUNTY — On Aug. 25, nearly 70 foster youth from area agencies attended a concert of the indie-rock band Cheating Daylight at the Soper Reese Theatre in Lakeport.
Through the Foster Care Ticket Giveaway, 68 tickets were divided among the Redwood Children”s Services, the 3 Angels Children and Family Services, and the Environmental Alternatives Foster Agency.
Phil Mascari, from Environmental Alternatives, said, “It was great. They were able to get down in front of the stage and dance. They really enjoyed themselves.”
Billed as “the teenage band of brothers,” the award-winning Cheating Daylight band features brothers Jesse, Kyle, and Jaden Crosson from Vacaville and brothers Jacob and Connor Gill from Cobb Mountain.
The idea for the ticket giveaway was a collaborative effort between the Gill”s grandmother and the Crosson”s father, Bill. However, all five band members jumped at the idea.
Jacob, who sings vocals and plays guitar said, “I had a friend in elementary school who came from a foster family. And I know the kinds of things a lot of those kids have to go through. We were all excited to get to perform for some of them.”
Connor, who sings background vocals and plays bass, agreed. “Even as we move forward we should keep doing things like this. It was really cool and we got some new fans,” Connor said.
Mascari said this type of outreach is not common. “This was a special event; a once-in-a-lifetime event. It just reflects on the good character of the (Gill) family, wanting to give back to the community.”
Up next for Cheating Daylight, which is nominated for the 2012 Rock Artist of the Year and Rock Album of the Year at the Los Angeles Music Awards, is a continuation of its tour promoting the new album “All We Know.”
In conjunction with the tour, the band was just selected to join the High School National Tour, which will include performances at 10 major-market California and Nevada schools. Tour dates and locations can be found at www.cheatingdaylight.com. Those interested in foster care can reach the Environmental Alternatives Foster Agency at 263-5501.
