MIDDLETOWN — Seven Middletown High School players scored in the first half Wednesday afternoon during a 12-2 rout of Rincon Valley Christian in non-league varsity girls” soccer action at Middletown.

“We talked about setting the tone early and that”s what we did,” Middletown assistant coach James Welton said of the 3-0 lead the Mustangs had built only five minutes into the game. “We were trying to focus on crosses and combinations and it worked very well. For seven players to score and five to get assists, it shows how deep this team is.”

Middletown (4-0) had a 7-0 lead before Rincon Valley Christian reached the scoreboard on an own goal, the result of a Calistoga corner kick being knocked accidentally into the net by a Mustangs player.

Emily Reed finished with four goals overall, the final three coming in the second half. Hannah Diaz had both of her goals in the first half while Kaleigh Alves also finished with two goals, one in each half.

Other goal-scorers were Kelly Wilkinson, Rosie Emerson, Ashlyn Welton and Taylor Montelli.

Diaz had two of the team”s six assists. Welton, Emerson, Karina Vargas and Paloma Colacion had the others.

Middletown led 8-1 at the half.

Jessie Flynn and Cheyanne Emerson split keeper duties, Flynn playing in the first half and Emerson in the second.

“Our defense played a very strong game,” Welton said.

The Mustangs are home again Friday to take on Sonoma Academy at 4:30 p.m.

In other action Wednesday afternoon:

Roseland Prep 1, Clear Lake 0

At Lakeport, Roseland Prep scored with 10 minutes left in the game to beat the Clear Lake Cardinals, who lost key defender Kelcie Reynolds to an undisclosed injury.

Reynolds, the team”s stopper, played the first half but left at halftime. Her absence proved critical down the stretch as Roseland Prep was attacking the goal.

“Two players went right down the middle and we broke down defensively,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “Nadine (Bradley) picked up one of them but the other had a point-blank shot on the keeper … there was nothing we could do.”

Clear Lake (4-4-2) had a handful of scoring opportunities but failed to convert, according to Larrea.

“We played well, we had plenty of shots, but we just didn”t get anything in,” Larrea said.

Apart from the one breakdown that led to the game”s only goal, the Clear Lake defense played tough, according to Larrea, who cited the efforts of Bradley, the team”s sweeper, keeper Heather Werner, Jordan Chapin and Emily Norwood for their outstanding play. Freshman Mina Werner also filled in at wing on offense and played well.

Clear Lake opens its North Central League I schedule at home Tuesday against Fort Bragg at 4:30 p.m.

“We”ll be fine for league,” Larrea said.

JV girls” soccer

Clear Lake 5, Anderson Valley 1

At Lakeport, Ciera Moreno scored three times and Shannon Mangana and Crystal Cepeda added goals as the Clear Lake junior varsity girls turned back Anderson Valley in non-league soccer action.

Clear Lake (3-4-2) had two goals on the board in the first three minutes, both set plays off free kicks. The Cardinals added to their 2-1 halftime lead with three insurance goals in the second half, two of them by Moreno.

Standouts on defense for the Cardinals, according to head coach Tony Paskaly, were sweeper Gabby Villa and keeper Ashlyn Braunscwieg.

Paskaly is assisted by coach Shaun Hornby.

Clear Lake returns to action Monday in Fort Bragg at 4:30 p.m.
