UPPER LAKE — Anna Westin led a balanced Clear Lake attack with six kills and the Cardinals notched their first win of the 2012 season, beating Upper Lake 25-9, 26-24, 25-22 in a non-league varsity volleyball match Thursday at Upper Lake.
Marsha”na Sugimoto and Aliza Atkins added four kills apiece, Haley Garzoli had three and freshman Rachel Wingler added two as the Cardinals squared their record at 1-1.
“We were mentally tougher tonight,” Clear Lake coach Marci Psalmonds said when asked to compare her team”s effort to the Cardinals” season-opening loss to Anderson Valley. “We won the rallies this time for sure.”
Atkins reeled off 10 straight points at the service line with her jump serve in the first game of the best-of-five match. She had four aces on the night.
Psalmonds said she went to her bench often and that all 11 of her players received a good amount of court time.
“It was fun,” Psalmonds said.
Upper Lake (0-3) received five kills apiece from Samantha Maddock, Ashley Lovrin and Sierra Fugate, a sophomore middle hitter. Another standout was libero Jaime Maddock with 17 digs.
“The first game was terrible,” Upper Lake coach Sandy Coatney said. “But we came out in the second game and really played volleyball. They didn”t let their mistakes get to them too much.
