Statistical leaders
Rushing — Austin Benson rushed for 188 yards and all four of Middletown”s touchdowns in a win over Upper Lake. John Mark Reagan”s 113 yards and two TDs helped power the Kelseyville Knights to their first win of the season. Upper Lake quarterback Travis Coleman had 87 yards on 14 carries in his team”s loss to Middletown. Dasan Vasquez and Robert McLean rushed for 85 and 76 yards, respectively, in Kelseyville”s win over John Swett. Vasquez had two TDs on the ground and McLean one. Johnny “Bubba” Egger”s 84 yards on 10 carries paced Lower Lake in its loss to Arcata.
Passing — How”s this for efficiency? Clear Lake”s Kenny Henninger completed four of five passes, three for touchdowns, in a 48-0 rout of Stellar Prep. He had 57 yards passing overall. Lower Lake”s Richard Tucker went 10-for-20 for 118 yards and a TD against Arcata while Kelseyville”s John Mark Reagan went 12-for-19 for 101 yards and a TD against Swett.
Receiving — Lower Lake”s Thomas Cross caught seven passes for 90 yards and a TD against Arcata. Kelseyville”s Robert McLean had five catches for 54 yards and a TD against Swett.
Highlights
Special teams — Clear Lake”s Gabe Strong went 4-for-5 on his extra-point tries against Stellar Prep. John Mark Reagan kicked three extra points against Swett. Upper Lake”s Travis Coleman boomed a punt 53 yards late in the second quarter against Middletown. Clear Lake”s Andre Buendia returned the second-half kickoff 58 yards against Stellar Prep, setting up a Cardinal touchdown two plays later.
Defense — Middletown limited Upper Lake to 55 yards of total offense in the second half Monday night at Bill Foltmer Stadium. Kelseyville”s Zac Cocco had five tackles and one assist, a sack and a fumble recovery against Swett. Upper Lake”s Ward Beecher recovered two fumbles in the loss to Middletown. Clear Lake registered four sacks for a combined 53 yards in losses against Stellar Prep.
Undefeated on Mondays – Middletown and coach Bill Foltmer now 1-0 on MNF.
Weird stuff — Not only was the Upper Lake-Middletown game played on a Monday, but Middletown was actually the designated visiting team on its homefield. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday in Upper Lake but moved to Monday … and eventually to Middletown … because of unhealthy air on the Northshore caused by the nearby Scotts Fire.
Four-score and 188 yards later — Middletown junior running back Austin Benson had a day, that”s for sure. He not only rushed for 188 yards and four TDs against Upper Lake, but he caught two passes for another 16 yards and recovered a fumble.
No undefeated teams this year — All of Lake County”s teams now have at least one loss.
Short turnaround — Following Monday”s battle at Bill Foltmer Field, Middletown and Upper Lake only have three days to prepare for their next game, which is on the road. Middletown visits El Molino (0-3) on Friday while Upper Lake calls on Portola (2-0).
JV teams doing well — Clear Lake, Kelseyville and Lower Lake are all 2-0. Middletown (1-0) had its game with Upper Lake canceled. Clear Lake hasn”t allowed a point in its two victories.
Had to be there — Stellar Prep sophomore running back Brian Clinksdale was ejected in the first quarter of his team”s loss to Clear Lake for unsportsmanlike conduct. Only a few minutes later, Clinksdale was back in the game and had actually participated in a couple of plays before the officials became aware of his presence on the field. He was flagged another 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct and ushered to the bench … for good. The Hayward team committed 130 yards in penalties overall, most of that in the first half.
Commitment to a long snapper — Your Oakland Raiders.
New last name for the Giants” Panda — Pablo “Strandemall.”
Double loss — When Middletown running back Tyler Drew left the Upper Lake game right before halftime with a rolled ankle, the Mustangs not only lost one of their top running backs, but their placekicker as well. Middletown was forced to go for two points following touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters, going 1-for-2. Drew also was missed on kickoffs. After Middletown opened the third quarter with a scoring drive, it was a big adventure for Drew”s replacement on the ensuing kickoff. Middletown was called for offsides on the first kickoff try and the re-kick sailed out of bounds, giving Upper Lake the ball at its 40-yard line. “You can”t afford to give a good team field position like that. We were lucky this time,” Middletown coach Bill Foltmer said.
So much for winning the turnover battle — Lower Lake forced five turnovers to Arcata”s two.
It”s a maximum Football Friday this week — Five games, all on Friday night. Clear Lake, Kelseyville and Lower Lake are hosting teams while Middletown and Upper Lake hit the road.
