EL MOLINO — Chalk up another first for Middletown High School veteran football coach Bill Foltmer.
“Not too many high school coaches get to win twice in one week,” Foltmer joked after watching the Mustangs beat the El Molino Lions 38-0 in non-league action Friday night in Forestville.
Middletown improved to 2-1 while El Molino (0-4) failed to score a point for the fourth week in a row.
Despite having only three days to prepare for the game after beating Upper Lake 28-8 on Monday night in Middletown, the Mustangs were plenty sharp against a punchless El Molino squad, which never got inside the Middletown 30-yard line.
“We moved the ball … I think we scored every time we got the ball,” Foltmer said. “I thought we were pretty crisp.”
Middletown scored 16 points in each of the first two quarters for a 32-0 halftime lead.
Javier Otero, called up the junior varsity squad to replace the injured Tyler Drew, scored on a 5-yard run in the first quarter to get the Mustangs on the board. Brad Beckwith added the conversion run.
Quarterback Ben Pike”s 20-yard pass to Jared Carrillo later in the quarter, combined with Anthonie Guzman”s conversion run, made it 16-0.
Coming off a 188-yard, four-touchdown performance against Upper Lake, Austin Benson scored Middletown”s final three TDs – runs of 57 and 5 yards in the second quarter and on a 63-yard pass from Pike in the third quarter.
Benson finished with 116 yards on only seven carries. Pike went 6-for-8 for 144 yards.
Middletown”s defense forced four turnovers, including two interceptions by Guzman.
