LOWER LAKE — Every bit as good as advertised, the Valley Christian Vikings beat the Lower Lake Trojans 49-0 in non-league varsity football action Friday night at Gordon Sadler Field.

Valley Christian improved to 4-0 on the season while Lower Lake dropped to 0-3. The Vikings led 14-0 after one quarter and 27-0 at halftime.

Lower Lake did move the ball inside Valley Christian”s 20-yard line on three occasions during the game but came away empty each time.

“Twice we turned it over on downs and another one ended with a pick,” Lower Lake coach Mike Huffman said of one of the two interceptions thrown by his quarterback, Richard Tucker. “We were playing them tough, we just couldn”t get into the end zone.”

One of Lower Lake”s drives stalled out late in the first half with Valley Christian leading 21-0, at which point quarterback Theman Taylor III drove the Vikings nearly the length of the field for a touchdown to make it 27-0.

“We were physical with them but they have more firepower than we do,” Huffman said. “We made some good strides tonight.”

Eric Moreno was Lower Lake”s leading rusher with 67 yards on eight carries. Tucker went 8-for-14 for 152 yards. His favorite target, tight end Thomas Cross, had five catches for 80 yards.

The Trojans lost wide receiver/defensive back Zane Kazaka to a mild concussion in the first half. His status for next week”s league opener at Middletown is questionable.

“I don”t think it”s serious, but we”re not taking any chances,” Huffman said.
