LAKE COUNTY — Youth are encouraged to participate in the Game Bird Heritage Apprentice Junior Pheasant Hunt at Highland Springs.
The hunt takes place Nov. 3. The deadline to apply is Oct. 17.
Hunters must have a valid 2011-2012 California hunting license and upland game bird stamp. Hunters possessing a junior hunting license do not need an upland game bird stamp and must be accompanied by a non-shooting adult 18 or older and must be present with the hunter upon check in. All shooters and non-shooters must wear shooting safety glasses, blaze orange and initial and sign a waiver.
Bring appropriate gear, water, hat, sturdy shoes/boots, sweater/jacket, mosquito repellent and a cooler with ice to store birds. For safety, apprentice hunters must have a properly fitted shotgun.
Those not prepared for the hunt or gear is deemed unsafe the hunter may be asked to withdraw.

Upon check-in with the Department of Fish and Game personnel present a valid 2011-2012 Jr. Hunting License to obtain a hunting permit.
Adults accompanying junior hunters may not possess any firearms and may not hunt under any circumstances. They are accompanying the junior hunters in supervisory capacity only.
Two male pheasants may be taken per hunter. Lead or steel shot may be used. All Department of Fish and Game regulations will be in effect. The use of dogs is permitted and encouraged. Permits must be returned to Department of Fish and Game personnel when leaving the area.
The hunting permit cannot be transferred to another person if the registered participant cannot attend.
Bring appropriate hunting gear such as; heavy pants, bright clothing, mosquito spray, and a change of clothing.
