MIDDLETOWN — Middletown Lion secretary Eldena Hanson Russell received the Helen Keller Award for thousands of hours collecting used glasses and hearing aids during the last 13 years.

Glasses are sorted into adult, children and sun categories. They are cleaned, packed in a box, labeled and delivered to the Vallejo Lions Club where the prescriptions are determined, labeled appropriately and delivered to the proper authority for delivery to foreign countries.

Russell has collected more then 7,000 pairs of used glasses. She is also district representative for Lions 4-C2 Hearing Foundation (ear of the Lion) California/Nevada.

Used hearing aids are sent to the main headquarters in Clovis to be reconditioned and reshelled by a repair service to meet the client”s prescribed needs.

The Ear of the Lion Hearing Foundation is dedicated to assisting low-income people with hearing impairments who are unable to afford the care they need to hear better.

Lions Clubs are encouraged to collect and send hearing aids no longer being used to the Clovis office or deposit them in the container located at the Middletown post office, clinic, American/West and Tri Counties Banks located in Middletown.

For more information, contact Russell at 987-0526 or 322-0300.
