Stepping up for safety
MISS: The Ukiah Valley Medical Center was one of four hospitals in the state impacted by a recalled drug.
HIT: Hospital administrators promptly alerted patients and media outlets about the voluntary drug recall.
Lakeport candidates square off
HIT: The six people running for three seats on the Lakeport City Council participated in a forum addressing a range of topics including water and sewer rates, annexation, Measure I, city businesses and marijuana laws.
MISS: Only about 40 people attended.
Lake County Lotto winner
HIT: Retired Clearlake Oaks postmaster Antonio Velasquez stepped forward to claim a $14 million Super Lotto jackpot.
HIT: The ticket was purchased at the Red and White store in Clearlake Oaks. The Lotto provided the store with a $70,000 bonus, or 0.5 percent of the jackpot.
HIT: Red and White”s owner Gary Nylander said he planned to make improvements at the store with the money.
HIT: Store manager Erin Ferguson said it was the first winning Super Lotto ticket purchased in either Lake or Mendocino counties.
Clearlake makes improvements
HIT: The Clearlake City Council last week approved items aimed at positive improvements in the city, including a general plan update and an agreement to convert a building at Highlands Park to a visitor”s center for the city.
HIT: Beginning Tuesday, the city will host a study and series of events to improve Lakeshore Drive corridor.
School lockdown
MISS: Reported gunshots heard near Burns Valley Elementary School Wednesday afternoon prompted school officials to lock the school down.
HIT: Clearlake Police did not find the source of the alleged gunshots and the lockdown was lifted after approximately 20 minutes.
Cause of fire released
HIT: Lakeport fire officials announced this week that an electrical issue caused the Sept. 21 fire that charred Penny Lane Emporium and significantly damaged the 1870s-era building.
MISS: Investigators were unable to find the exact source because of the extensive fire damage.
Weather creates danger
MISS: State fire officials said above-average temperatures, below-normal rainfall and record dry conditions resulted in an above-normal potential for large fires.
MISS: The warm weather supports the spread of West Nile virus.
HIT: No human cases of the virus were reported in Lake County to date.
Knife-carrying parolee caught
HIT: Clearlake police Wednesday arrested a parolee who was allegedly involved in a high-speed pursuit during the weekend.
MISS: William Lefferts reportedly ran from the police officer who spotted him Wednesday morning but got caught about two blocks later. He allegedly discarded a large knife while being arrested.
Park stabbing nets arrest
MISS: Stanley George Hess, 57, of Clearlake was arrested for allegedly stabbing a man, woman and boy at Austin Park after a late-night argument quickly turned physical.
HIT: Clearlake police arrived on scene and detained Hess. He was booked into the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility and charged with a handful of felonies.
