SANTA ROSA — Middletown High School beat St. Helena in head-to-head scoring during Coastal Mountain Conference varsity boys” cross country action on Thursday at the 3-mile Spring Lake course in Santa Rosa.
Although the Mustangs didn”t have a runner in the top five — St. Helena”s Grant Jeffcoat won the race in 17 minutes, 59 seconds — they did place runners fifth through eighth to beat St. Helena 20-42.
Riley Adams led the way for the Mustangs with a fifth-place time of 19:03. He was followed across the finish line by teammates Cassidy Parker (19:07), Jake Tangermann (19:08) and Madax McDowell (19:09).
Upper Lake beat an incomplete Rincon Valley Christian team.
In varsity girls” action, St. Helena beat Middletown 19-40. Julie Eyer of St. Helena scored an easy win in 21:04, 61 seconds ahead of runner-up Madison Provost of Rincon Valley Christian (22:05). Middletown”s Tori Roderick came in third in 22:42 and Upper Lake”s Bianca Cruz was sixth in 24:25.
In the junior varsity boys” division, Middletown beat St. Helena in head-to-head scoring. Diego Munoz of the Mustangs won the race in 20:42 and Upper Lake”s Matt Willard (20:47.6) edged out Middletown”s Jacob Olson (20:47.8) for second place.
Rounding out the top five places were Justin Lewis of Upper Lake (20:57) and Connor Smith of Middletown (21:51).
Upper Lake competes in the Clam Beach Invitational on Saturday.
