In honor of slain child”s memory
HIT: The Clearlake City Council voted unanimously to rename the playground at Austin Park the Skyler Rapp Memorial Playground to honor the 4-year-old.
MISS: The toddler was killed during a shootout at a gathering outside his home in June 2011.
HIT: The council approved establishing a policy for naming and renaming city parks and facilities in September.
Civic-minded students
HIT: Yuba College, Clear Lake Associated Students will host a forum for Clearlake City Council candidates.
Wildfire quickly extinguished
HIT: Fire crews contained a blaze in Spring Valley about 20 minutes after arriving on scene.
HIT: Officials credited speedy containment to response from fire units and weed abatement work previously done.
MISS: The fire sparked after a resident put ashes in an unsafe place.
Be prepared
HIT: The second annual Disaster Expo takes place with about 30 public and private entities that will supply information to prepare for disaster situations.
HIT: Kmart hosts its annual safety weekend. The store will offer the “Kmart Cares” shopping list, a catalog of suggested emergency items.
HIT: The American Red Cross hosts a class in Clearlake that will teach attendees how to open an emergency shelter.
Motorcyclist dies
MISS: Joseph P. Kane Jr. died on Butts Canyon Road after crashing his Harley Davidson.
MISS: Kane was the second motorcyclist killed in a Butts Canyon Road crash in less than two months. Bruce Knoles also died after being thrown from his bike Aug. 22.
Vineyard Run for Literacy
HIT: Runners and walkers will support adult literacy during the Steele Wines Harvest Festival.
Working to save the world
HIT: Dr. Paula Dhanda received about $20,000 in medical supplies for her trip to Nepal, including a device known as the Solar Suitcase that provides electrical power in places where it may be scarce.
HIT: Dhanda said the Lake County community donated money and clothing. She will train 10 midwives in Nepal.
MISS: One in 12 women in Nepal die during childbirth.
Driving safe
HIT: An event teaching teens or interested drivers how to control vehicles under adverse conditions is sponsored by the California Highway Patrol and the Lakeside Family Fun and Event Center.
MISS: In 2010 more than 57,000 teen drivers were in crashes and teen drivers were at fault in 67 percent.
Champions on Clear Lake
HIT: Clear Lake hosts the Best Bass Tournament of Champions this weekend.
HIT: The event is expected to draw about 160 teams, with the winning team guaranteed $20,000.
?Friends” book sale
HIT: The Middletown Library is holding its semi-annual book sale. Funds will be used to purchase new materials.
Financial literacy
HIT: An ongoing speakers” series brings Lake County business owners to speak about financial literacy.
Record-setting weekend
HIT: The 17th annual Sponsoring Survivorship walk/run event drew a record crowd and raised more than $16,000 for the all-volunteer nonprofit organization that assists county women and men battling breast cancer.
HIT: The 22nd annual Konocti Challenge set an all-time participation high with 759 bicyclists.
Giving back
MISS: A reprint of headlines in the paper”s Lake County Diamonds section put Drug and Alcohol Counselor Wayne Anderson on the spot when his arrest from 25 years ago resurfaced.
HIT: Anderson turned the experience into an opportunity to share his story and educate others publicly.
Supervisor presentations
HIT: The Lake County Board of Supervisors presented a proclamation Tuesday declaring this as National 4-H Week.
HIT: PG&E representatives gave the county a $13,992 rebate check because of energy upgrades to county facilities.
