LAKEPORT — The City Council welcomed its new members and named a new mayor Tuesday.
Kenny Parlet, Martin Scheel and Marc Spillman took the oath of office partway through the evening meeting at City Hall. The three men were the top finishers in the November election.
“I”m really proud to be in a position where the city seems to be so healthy. And I hope that I can do what I can to learn everything I can to help this council and the city move forward and make it an even better place to live than it is right now,” Parlet, the leading vote-getter, said.
“I look forward to getting the job done that those out there of you that have put it in my hands,” Scheel, who finished second in the election, said.
Spillman explained why he was wearing a “Congratulations princess” nametag, which referred to a nickname given to him by a girl in his neighborhood.
“When I decided to run a third time, she wrote this, ”Congratulations princess.” She gave it to me while we were campaigning, said that it would get me up here. And I promised her that if I did, I”d wear it the first night,” he said.
Before Parlet, Scheel and Spillman took their seats, the previous council completed the steps required for the reorganization.
Outgoing members Suzanne Lyons and Bob Rumfelt were part of 4-0 votes to adopt a resolution reciting the facts of the election and certify the registrar of voters” canvass. Roy Parmentier did not attend the meeting.
The new council proceeded to select Tom Engstrom as the mayor for the next year. Stacey Mattina moved from the mayor”s chair and into the role of mayor pro tem.
Council members then voted unanimously to approve an ordinance establishing informal bidding procedures under the Uniform Public Construction Cost Accounting Act.
Earlier in the meeting, Lakeport Main Street Association executive director Carol Hays presented the organization”s business of the quarter award to Hillside Honda.
The council will hold its first meeting of the new year on Jan. 15. City Hall will be closed Friday through Jan. 1 because of holidays and employee furloughs.
