LAKE COUNTY — Carrying chains, food and warm blankets during winter trips are some of the safety tips offered to drivers by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Clear Lake Area.
Before heading for snow country, make sure the vehicle”s brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, heater and exhaust system are in top condition. Check the antifreeze and be ready for colder temperatures.
To prevent icing, drivers may want to add a special solvent to the windshield washer reservoir. Check the tires to make sure they are properly inflated and the tread is in good condition.
Always carry chains. Make sure they are the proper size for the vehicle”s tires and are in working order. Chains must be installed on the drive wheels. Make sure to carry a flashlight and chain repair links. Be certain whether the vehicle is front- or rear-wheel drive.
Other suggested items to carry in the vehicle include an ice scraper or commercial de-icer, a broom for brushing off snow, a shovel to free the vehicle if it”s snowed-in, sand or burlap for traction if the wheels become stuck and an old towel to keep hands clean and dry. Food, water, warm blankets, hats, gloves and extra clothing are also good to carry.
Drivers should also take an extra car key, keep the gas tank full, keep the windshield and windows clear, drive slowly and be more observant.
Trips to the mountains can take longer during winter, especially with storm conditions or icy roads. Get an early start and allow plenty of travel time.
If the vehicle stalls, stay with it and try to conserve fuel while maintaining warmth. Be alert to any possible exhaust or carbon monoxide problems.
The CHP urges drivers to check road conditions by calling the Caltrans road conditions hotline at 800-427-ROAD (7623). Drivers are reminded to buckle up, slow down and to designate a sober driver when drinking.
