LUCERNE ? Rae Eby-Carl, the former senior deputy director of the Lake Family Resource Center, is the new executive director of the Lucerne Alpine Senior Center (LASC).

Eby-Carl took over for Robert Clifton March 4 and immediately began working on an appeal of the Area Agency on Aging”s termination of the center”s Meals on Wheels program after an investigation found it a “high risk nutrition provider to seniors,” according to an LASC news release dated Monday.

The Lucerne center expects the AAA will hear the appeal this month, the release said.

“Eby-Carl is correcting all reported deficiencies of inspections on Feb. 27 and March 5,” the news release added. “Now and in the future, the Center will follow dietary guidelines and meet expectations of government agencies including the Lake County Health Department, State of California Department of Aging, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Department of Agriculture.”

The news release continued, “Eby-Carl says that the Center expects a fair hearing with AAA and will present all corrections and plans for monitoring services closely.? She notes that the north shore area has depended on Lucerne Alpine Senior Center for many years and that ideally Meals-on-Wheels would continue to be part of the provided services originating on the north shore.? Eby-Carl states that the dedicated staff and volunteers of Lucerne Alpine Senior Center are committed to healthy and nutritious meals as well as outreach services.”

According to the news release, Eby-Carl “has many years of experience managing programs, meeting guidelines, and monitoring service quality.? Most recently she served for thirteen years as the Senior Deputy Director of Lake Family Resource Center and also was with Lake Juvenile Hall for 12 years.”

The release quotes Lucerne center board chair Ted Shimizu as saying, “Eby-Carl”s experience in administering programs was a prime factor in placing her at this critical time for the center.”

This month the Center is participating in National Nutrition Month and the local efforts for funding Meals-on-Wheels.? Donation cans in north shore communities will be available for collecting funds with all donations going to Meals-on-Wheels.?

More than a third of seniors have incomes below the federal poverty level and count on quality nutrition through programs like Lucerne Alpine Senior Center.? Lunches are served on site Monday through Friday, as well as breakfasts on Saturday.? A food pantry is available for emergency nutrition needs. Reducing hunger and food insecurity will continue to be goals of the center.? For more information call 274-8779 and ask for Rae.?
