ST. HELENA — Middletown came from a set down to win two matches on Friday and the Mustangs beat St. Helena 4-1 in the Coastal Mountain Conference opener for both of these tennis teams on Friday in St. Helena.
“Five seesaw matches going on five different courts … it was exciting to watch,” Middletown coach Eric Soderstrom said.
Maddie Kucer lost her first set in No. 3 singles before outlasting Alex Pierce 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. Her Middletown teammates, Ariana Diaz and Chris King, did the same thing in first doubles while rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Just the opposite occurred in first singles where Middletown”s Jeremy Turner won 6-2 before Rory Winters of St. Helena came back to win 2-6, 6-0, 6-0.
Also for the Mustangs, who improved to 4-0 on the season, Nika Gibbs won 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) in No. 2 singles, and Robert Amante and Jonathan Nance prevailed 6-0, 6-3 in No. 2 doubles.
Middletown”s Jacob Olson and Jonathan Wilson also won an exhibition doubles match 6-1.
The Mustangs return to action Tuesday at Kelseyville.
