LAKE COUNTY — The California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced it would be operating a sobriety checkpoint in Lake County this weekend.

The checkpoint will be in effect between 2 and 10 p.m. Sunday at an undisclosed location.

“The desired result is to save lives and make the roadways safe for both our community residents and those visiting our beautiful county,” Lt. Greg Baarts, CHP Clear Lake Area commander, said Thursday.

Officers trained in detecting alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers will staff the sobriety checkpoint. Drug-recognition evaluators, certified by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), will be present to provide on-the-spot assessments of drivers suspected of drug use.

Officials said officers would also be equipped with modern, hand-held breath-analyzing devices, which provide an accurate measure of blood-alcohol concentrations of suspected drunk drivers.

Baarts said all vehicles would be checked, traffic-volume permitting.

“Drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs can expect to be arrested,” he added. “Our goal is to ensure the safe passage of each and every motorist by targeting roads where there is a high frequency of drunk driving.”

A grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA, provided funding for the checkpoint program.
