SACRAMENTO ? State Senator Marty Block (SD-39), chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee No. 1, which deals with education issues, issued the following statement following Governor Jerry Brown”s unveiling of the May revision to the state budget:
“For the first time in several years, the Legislature can begin the process of restoring vital government services decimated by the worldwide economic recession.
This is especially welcome news to California”s students at all levels, their teachers and faculty. ?
“As we prepare to restructure and increase state funding to our schools and higher education institutions, we must ensure that we build in accountability so that allocated dollars serve the young people they are intended to serve, and that schools which don”t deliver for kids are given the oversight and support they require for success.
“We must also remain cautious as we complete our work because we don”t know yet what the next few years will bring us. But for now, we can move forward with a lighter heart and a heavier wallet than anticipated.
“Finally, I applaud Governor Brown for his disciplined vision and the great effort he undertook to get California back on track. We”re at a better place because of his leadership and collaboration with the Legislature.”
