LAKE COUNTY — With temperatures expected to reach triple digits in Lake County and around California in the days to come, fire safety becomes paramount, according to fire officials.

CAL FIRE offered a series of tips for homeowners and residents as weather and vegetation conditions become drier.

People should always mow or use a weed-eater in the morning (before 10 a.m.) or in the evening (after 6 p.m.), and never in extremely dry conditions. Lawn mowers should not be used in dry vegetation, and spark arresters are required in wildland areas on all portable gasoline-powered equipment.

Residents, especially those in rural areas, should make sure they have at least 100 feet of defensible space around their properties.

Dead weeds and vegetation should be cleared, leaves and needles should be removed from gutters and branches should be trimmed at least six feet above the ground.

Camping enthusiasts should make sure they have a campfire permit and they are allowed on the land they”re visiting before starting campfires. Afterward, people should ensure all campfires are properly and completely put out.

Also, smokers should always double-check that cigarettes are properly extinguished.
