LAKE COUNTY — Flames and smoke glowed under the moon as helicopters and planes fought a fire that brushed the edge of Highway 20 had consumed roughly 70 acres of land as of 8:20 p.m. Friday.
The blaze threatened a structure near Double Eagle Ranch and for hours spread over a hill and away from the highway. Tall trees and dry grass were blackened on the path the flames had taken just minutes before.
The fire had been 20-percent contained as of 8:20 p.m., but its spread rate had slowed down significantly, James Crabtree of Northshore Fire Protection District (NFPD) said. Firefighters kept the blaze from crossing Highway 20, but a part of the highway was grazed by the fire.
Firefighters from various departments including NFPD, CAL FIRE, Kelseyville Fire Protection District and help from Mendocino and Williams fire agencies responded to the fire at about 5:30 p.m.
Efforts to contain the fire were expected to continue through the night, and rough estimates put containment time into the early morning, Crabtree said.
