LOWER LAKE — Luis Ruiz scored goals in each half, but the Lower Lake Trojans fell 4-2 to the Calistoga Wildcats in non-league varsity boys” soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Gordon Sadler Field in Lower Lake.

It was the season opener for the Trojans (0-1), who grabbed a brief 1-0 lead on a Ruiz goal assisted by Ricardo Manriquez early in the first half. Calistoga rallied to go in front 3-1 by halftime.

The Wildcats had a 4-1 lead in the second half before Ruiz scored his second goal, which was unassisted.

“Calistoga plays great soccer,” Lower Lake coach Dan Griffin said. “They were definitely the better team out there today.”

Griffin, back for a second season as head coach, said there were plenty of positives about the Trojans” first effort of 2013.

“I was rotating in a lot of players,” he said. “I felt good about how we played.”

The Trojans hit the road today to play El Molino at 6 p.m.
