MIDDLETOWN — Madison Ketchum, Rosie Emerson and Kaleigh Alves scored goals as the Middletown Mustangs turned back Ferndale 3-1 in non-league girls” soccer action on a warm Friday in Middletown, where the visiting Wildcats struggled with the heat.
“They were a fairly decent team, but they did struggle with the heat down here,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said. “They have some young girls who are good players. I think they”re going to be a good team.”
While Middletown (2-1) wasn”t at full strength, the defending North Coast Section Division III champions had more than enough firepower to handle the Wildcats. Ketchum scored the first goal of the game with an assist from Alves. Emerson”s goal made it 2-0 in the first half before Ferndale knocked in a penalty kick right before halftime.
Alves” goal in the second half provided the Mustangs with some extra cushion.
While Emerson and Alves anchored the Mustangs at the forward positions, several other Mustangs turned in strong performances, including midfielders Ketchum and Caitlin Lemoine, and defenders Ashley Hart and Karina Vargas.
“We had some young girls step up,” Owens said.
Middletown returns to action today in Calistoga against South Fork at 10 a.m.
