LAKEPORT — Quarterback Tyler Dore scored on a 9-yard run in the first quarter to give Clear Lake the lead, but the Durham Trojans rallied to beat the Cardinals 14-6 in a non-league junior varsity football game on Friday evening in Lakeport.
It was the season opener for the Cardinals (0-1). Durham, a member of the Northern Section, improved to 2-0.
Clear Lake”s touchdown held up until the final play of the first half when Durham scored on a pass to knot the score at 6-6. The Trojans pushed ahead to stay in the third quarter with a rushing touchdown and two-point conversion.
John Vertrees played well on both sides of the ball for Clear Lake, leading the team with 70 rushing yards on 17 carries and in solo tackles with six, including a sack. Dore finished with 50 yards rushing and 25 passing and was among the team”s top tacklers with four solo stops and two assists. Jeff Morton also had four solo tackles and two assists as well as a fumble recovery.
Clear Lake plays Upper Lake (0-1) on Saturday at noon.
