RICHMOND — Coleman Drew rushed for 74 yards and two touchdowns, Robert Carey returned a fumble 60 yards for another score, and Antonio Vargas tackled a Salesian running back in the end zone for a safety on Saturday as the Middletown Mustangs shut out the Pride 21-0 in non-league junior varsity football action in Richmond.
It was the season opener for the Mustangs (1-0), who return most of their starters from last year”s club.
“We started only one sophomore last year, so there are a lot of starters back,” Middletown coach Tony Hart said.
Drew”s 9-yard run in the first quarter made it 6-0. Vargas” safety pushed that lead to 8-0 in the second quarter and Drew scored on a 6-yard run late in the half to make it 15-0 as Carey added the extra-point kick.
Middletown picked up an insurance score with 40 seconds left in the game when Dean Bradley sacked the Salesian quarterback, producing a fumble. Carey scooped up the ball and raced 60 yards in the other direction for the touchdown.
Albert Ruske led the Mustangs with 11 total tackles and Wyatt Jones had 10. Drew had an interception.
Middletown hosts Healdsburg (0-2) on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Bill Foltmer Field.
