KELSEYVILLE — Lisa Provine of Kelseyville couldn”t believe her eyes. Curled up on her lawn was this baby squirrel. It had just been born and its eyes weren”t open yet.
Apparently it had fallen out of a nearby tree.
Provine gently picked up the squirrel and looked around for its mother. The mother was nowhere to be found. Apparently the mother had either been killed or had abandoned its young. Provine then called the Wasson Wildlife Rescue Center in Lakeport and was told to bring the baby squirrel in. The baby squirrel was later transferred to the Clearlake Veterinary Clinic.
The Wasson Wildlife Rescue Center rescues dozens of wild birds and other wildlife every week. Susan Cannon DVM is the person in charge of the wildlife rescue operation and she says her staff donates its time and money to save small wild animals and birds.
The squirrel is just one of several small animals and birds that are recovering at the center from either an injury, being sick or young and abandoned.
The Rescue Center treats all kinds of small animals and birds ranging from baby skunks, raccoons, various species of hawks, owls and ducks as well as squirrels.
According to Cannon the funds needed to operate the center come from donations and volunteers.
She welcome donations as well as volunteer help. The Wildlife Center is located in the Wasson Memorial Veterinary Clinic located at 3083 Highway 175 in Lakeport. Call 263-5380 for more information.
