CLEARLAKE — A man was charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder of a peace officer, after he allegedly struck and pinned the officer with his SUV against a parked truck early Sunday morning.
The officer was transported by REACH to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries, but was later declared to be in stable condition, Clearlake Police Department (CPD) Sgt. Tim Hobbs stated in a press release. The officer, whose name has not been released, sustained numerous injuries including several fractured ribs, a fractured spine and major lacerations to his head and neck.
The incident occurred after the injured officer and another officer performed a traffic stop on a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Daniel York, 53, at about 4:30 a.m. on Lakeshore Drive near Redbud Park. When York pulled over, passenger Katherine Jackson, 32, exited the vehicle and reportedly ran away from the scene.
When the officers exited the vehicle, York reportedly put the SUV in reverse and accelerated, pinning one of the officers between the SUV and a parked Ford F-250 truck and drove off, Hobbs stated. The parked truck was struck with enough force that it moved several feet and struck another vehicle.
The second officer apprehended Jackson and returned to the injured officer to render medical aid. Lake County Fire Protection District medical personnel responded to the scene and requested aid from REACH.
It was later discovered Jackson ran to get away from the situation and was not charged with a crime, CPD Sgt. Nick Bennett said.
York was on active parole and had an outstanding parole warrant for his arrest, Hobbs stated.
A Lake County Sheriff”s Office (LCSO) deputy later found the SUV after it was reported to have crashed into a tree at the intersection of Lasky and West 40th avenues.
During the investigation, authorities discovered York was possibly at a residence in the 4700 block of 40th Avenue.
CPD officers arrived at the house, where York was thought to be, with two K-9 units at about 8:45 a.m., Hobbs stated. York allegedly tried to flee, but returned to the house after K-9 Harley was deployed and started running toward him. York then reportedly tried to hide in the residence in a second story loft. The officers then entered the residence and demanded York to come out, who reportedly refused. Officers then deployed K-9 Dex. Dex found York and apprehended him by biting York”s left arm.
York was reportedly in custody at the hospital receiving treatment for his injuries and will be transported to the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility on a no-bail-hold after being released from the hospital. He was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, assault with a deadly weapon, felony hit and run and felony avoiding arrest, Bennett said.
CPD with the assistance of the Lake County District Attorney”s Office, the California Highway Patrol and the LCSO are conducting a joint investigation.
