LAKEPORT — A trial date was set for a man charged with the shooting death of a woman two years ago during an alleged robbery.
Judge Andrew S. Blum set the trial date for March 19 for Daniel Ray Loyd, of Nice, after a short discussion about whether defense attorney Mitchell Hauptman would have enough time to be ready for trial.
Judge Blum determined Sept. 18 that there was enough evidence for Loyd, 52, to face a jury trial after a preliminary hearing during which several detectives revealed their findings to the court.
Loyd”s charges stem from an incident Sept. 13 2011 when he allegedly shot Cindy Yvette Quiett in the abdomen and caused her death. Loyd was reportedly trying to rob Patrick Ryden of money and drugs when he allegedly pointed a revolver at Ryden”s face and Ryden smacked it away. When the gun was smacked, the weapon was fired and Quiett was killed.
During the investigation, authorities reportedly obtained an on the record confession by Loyd, who said he regretted shooting Quiett, Lake County Sheriff”s Office Detective John Drewry said during the preliminary hearing. Loyd also allegedly said he approached Ryden with no intention of shooting him but planned to rob him.
Loyd, who at one point was being considered to face the death penalty, is awaiting trial in custody at the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility. Trial assignment was scheduled for 8:15 a.m. on March 14. A settlement conference is scheduled to take place March 10.
