LAKEPORT — At 108 years, Freda Mohr is the oldest person in Lake County and one of the oldest in California, if not the nation.
Mohr was born on Oct. 3, 1905 in Sullivan, Ill. to a ranch family that raised cattle. Her life is a lesson in American history. When she was born Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt was President of the United States, the Julliard School was opening in New York City, the average life expectancy in the country was 47 years and there were only 8,000 cars in the United States. Horse and buggy was still the preferred mode of transportation in a country that had only 147 miles of paved roads. The start of World War I was still nearly a decade away and the Titanic wouldn”t sink for another seven years.
Mohr has lived in Lake County for the last 13 years. Up until a few months ago she lived with her daughter, Mikki Nevin, in Lakeport. She now resides at the Rocky Point Care Center in Lakeport.
According to Nevin, her mother rode through Lakeport on a motorcycle on her 100th birthday and up until last year she regularly played bridge and enjoyed square dancing. She also enjoyed cooking and reading. Along with her daughter she is a member of the Lakeport Elks Club.
Mohr has two children and both are still alive. She has three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
