UPPER LAKE — Sutter Lakeside Hospital and Marymount California University have officially joined forces with The Hub, which serves the communities of Upper Lake, Nice and Lucerne and aims to serve as a place of integration where students can find access to resources outside of school.
The Hub is a pilot project in Upper Lake to develop the Community School Model specific to rural areas such as Lake County. The long-term goal will be to develop The Hub in each community in Lake County and serve as a model for the rural counties, according to Lake County Superintendent of Schools Wally Holbrook.
The new center for resources opened its doors the first day of school in Upper Lake Aug. 14.
With the Hub, management seeks to help bring resources closer to community members. In the past, people had to travel to Lakeport or Clearlake for certain resources, the Hub is looking to alleviate some of that burden.
As a center not primarily focused just on education, but mostly on other surrounding factors in a student”s life, the Hub aims to provide options for out-of-classroom help such as medical care, transportation, housing, counseling and other things.
Sutter Lakeside Hospital joined The Hub team after initially providing the facility for The Hub office on the Upper Lake campus and now provides its Mobile Medical Van on a weekly basis.
Marymount California University, in the future, may provide student volunteers and possible internships related to community development and community service, Holbrook stated.
In other “Hub” news, California Superintendent of Schools Tom Torlakson visited and toured The Hub last Sunday. The superintendent was impressed with the spirit of collaboration and strong focus on coordinated services that support the core instructional program at the local community level, Holbrook stated.
The Hub is located at 750 Old Lucerne Road in Upper Lake. Operational hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
