MIDDLETOWN — A special recognition ceremony for Civil War veteran Lorenzo Theodore Adams took place Saturday in Middletown. Adams was a private in the Union Army with the Wisconsin volunteers, 37th Regiment, Company F.
He was born in 1848 and died in 1898. A military headstone was never erected marking his burial site and his grave was lost. Through the efforts of his great-granddaughter, Beverly Gibson of Montana, as well as members of the local Historical Society, his grave was located outside the cemetery boundary and overgrown by vegetation. Adams was recognized with full military honors provided by the Military Funeral Honors Team of Lake County.
The ceremony included the firing of three rifle volleys and the playing of Taps by two buglers. The Army sent two members of the Army Honor Guard to fold and present a flag to Gibson.
The Veterans Administration provided a headstone for his grave. Three direct descendants of Adams, including Gibson, attended the ceremony.
