Highlights
Special teams — Lake County”s placekickers pretty much had the night off Friday with only four extra points attempted and two made.
Defense — Middletown limited Kelseyville to 42 yards of offense and two first downs in the second half. Lower Lake”s Erick Moreno recovered two fumbles against Cloverdale. Middletown”s Anthonie Guzman picked off his fourth pass of the season.
Sack attack — Clear Lake”s Gabe Oilar-Strong registered 2 1/2 sacks against St. Helena. He also recovered a fumble. Jon Deakins logged is fifth sack of the season for Lower Lake.
Crowded at the top — It”s really a case of haves vs. have-nots in the North Central League I varsity football race this season. Middletown leads the pack at 4-0, one game ahead of Clear Lake, Fort Bragg, St. Helena and Cloverdale, all at 3-1.
Streaks — Middletown”s defense went five games – 20 quarters – without allowing a point, a streak that ended Friday night when Kelseyville”s Kevin Duty scored on a 34-yard run in the first quarter. The Mustangs did blank the Knights over the final three quarters, so a new streak is born.
JV update — Middletown”s junior varsity squad improved to 4-0 in league and 7-0 overall with a 34-13 win at Kelseyville. The Mustangs” first two touchdowns came on a 71-yard pass from Robert Carey to Coleman and a 65-yard Drew run.
Bass Bowl IV — The Clear Lake Cardinals (5-2) host the Kelseyville Knights (3-4) in Bass Bowl IV on Friday night at Don Owens Stadium in Lakeport. A Civil War-era cannon will be on hand to fire (loudly) when either team scores. If it”s a shootout, the surrounding homes are in for a real treat. Clear Lake leads the series 2-1. It”s the fourth straight year the game is taking place at Lakeport (last year”s game was supposed to be in Kelseyville but the stands on the home side of the field had a structural defect and the game was moved to Lakeport).
New county rushing leader — Kelseyville”s Kevin Duty takes the lead with 895 yards. Middletown”s Austin Benson, who has played in only six games this season, is second with 857.
Don”t see it very often — Lower Lake won the turnovers battle with Cloverdale five to two on Friday night and still lost by 21 points.
A note on defense — The Denver Broncos don”t play any.
A note on Brian Wilson — No ring for you.
Key girls” soccer battle — Middletown (11-1) needs a win today in Lakeport against Clear Lake (9-3) to all but secure itself a league co-championship and a sixth straight North Central League I title.
Key volleyball match — Middletown and St. Helena clash on Thursday in Middletown.
Finishing strong — Juan Lopez of Finley won the Lake County Tournament of Champions on Saturday at Buckingham, the final even this season on the Lake County Amateur Golf Circuit.
Clutch performance of the week — Middletown”s Kaleigh Alves, who scored three goals in the second half to give the Mustangs a come-from-behind 3-2 victory against previously undefeated Cloverdale in varsity girls” soccer action Thursday in Middletown.
Yikes! — The undefeated Calistoga Wildcats (6-0) visit the winless Upper Lake Cougars (0-6) on Saturday.
