CLOVERDALE — Austin Benson rushed for 151 yards and four touchdowns while backfield mate Brad Beckwith added 102 yards and a TD as the Middletown Mustangs overpowered the Cloverdale Eagles 47-7 in a North Central League I varsity football game on Friday night at Daly Field.
“Our line does a great job,” Middletown coach Bill Foltmer said. “When you have two backs go over 100 yards, you know the line is opening up some big holes.”
Middletown (5-0 league, 7-1 overall) built a 27-0 lead before Cloverdale scored on quarterback Josh Holden”s 13-yard run in the second quarter.
The Mustangs put the game away early in the third quarter, twice turning Cloverdale fumbles into quick scores. Benson touchdown runs of 10 and 5 yards pushed Middletown”s lead to 40-7.
“That broke their backs,” Foltmer said.
Middletown moved out to a 7-0 lead on a 14-yard pass from Josiah Amos to Brad Bologna. A pair of Benson 5-yard scoring runs and a Beckwith 7-yard TD run made it 27-0.
Cesar Macias added an insurance touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 40-yard run.
Greg Divelbiss picked off two Cloverdale passes and Garrett Gabaldon and Wyatt Hall had two sacks apiece to anchor a strong Middletown effort on defense.
Cloverdale (3-2, 3-5) had its three-game winning streak snapped.
