MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown Mustangs scored on their first possession and never looked back en route to a 34-18 victory over the Cloverdale Eagles in North Central League I junior varsity football action on Friday in Cloverdale.

Middletown, now 5-0 in league and 8-0 overall, pushed ahead to stay on Coleman Drew”s 19-yard touchdown run. The snap on the extra-point kick misfired but holder Connor Armstrong ended up running the ball into the end zone for a two-point conversion and an 8-0 lead.

Middletown continued to add to its lead from there, scoring on a 65-yard screen pass from Armstrong to Tyler Fleenor and on a 47-yard Drew run to go up 22-0 by the end of the first quarter.

The Mustangs added their final two touchdowns in the second quarter, Albert Ruske scoring on a 20-yard run and Fleenor intercepting a pitched ball from the Cloverdale quarterback and returning it 45 yard for a touchdown to make it 34-0.

Cloverdale ended the shutout with a touchdown in the third quarter.

Drew had only four carries but still gained 90 yards. Armstrong went 4-for-5 passing for 106 yards. Fleenor had two catches for 84 yards.

Brett Pike had an interception for the Mustangs, who host Clear Lake on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Middletown closes out the season Nov. 8 in Lower Lake.
