UPPER LAKE — Congressman Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena) visited The Hub and the partners involved with the resource center on Monday.
“This program is incredibly impressive and there is no way anyone could argue the topic,” Thompson said. “If anyone can make this happen, these are the people who can do it.”
The starting point is just getting help, according to Wally Holbrook, superintendent of schools. The Hub, located at 750 Old Lucerne Road in Upper Lake, offers help with medical services, dental services, transportation resources, dental screenings, food, clothing, housing information, counseling services for youth and families, parenting support and education and information and assistance with the health insurance options through the Affordable Care Act.
“Sutter Lakeside Hospital used to once own this building and had a clinic here, but couldn”t make a go of it, so they arranged to leave the building here and sign it over to the high school,” Holbrook said. “That”s what really started the location and is helping start what was already here. Sutter continues to be a partner with us and they provide the mobile health van here twice a week.”
“This is the perfect spot, that”s why it”s called The Hub, it”s on the high school campus, across the street from the middle school and elementary school,” Holbrook said.
The Hub wants the community to become engaged by hosting parenting classes and possibly start a student and parent council, becoming a social hub for the community with their children or even seniors.
The long-term goal of the organization is to have something similar to the Hub in every community in Lake County.
“One of the most important things about The Hub, it will allow students to sign themselves out of school at any time and walk over to The Hub for confidential services, Gloria Flaherty, executive director of Lake Family Resource Center said. “Anybody else can just drop in at any time.”
