SANTA ROSA — Claire Vargas and Mary McCallister of Kelseyville High School dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision to Lupe Jacobson and Julia Pollack of Lick-Wilmerding High School of San Francisco during first-round action in the North Coast Section Girls” Tennis Championships on Thursday at Cardinal Newman High School in Santa Rosa.

While girls” tennis is officially contested during the fall months in the section, Lake County girls play the sport in the spring. McCallister and Abby McQueen earned a berth into the sectional championships by winning the Coastal Mountain Conference girls” doubles title last spring, however McQueen sustained a knee injury in July and was unable to participate. Vargas replaced her on the Kelseyville team.

“It was a great outing for them,” Kelseyville coach Jeff McLaren said. “I just told them to go out there and have fun and that”s exactly what they did. They were up a break in the first set.”

McCallister, an All-League player for Kelseyville”s North Central League I-champion volleyball team this fall, had only one practice to get ready for the match, according to McLaren.
