UKIAH — The Lowery Student Center of Mendocino College was alive with the celebration of D?a de los Muertos on Oct. 30.

The festivities kicked off at about 4:30 p.m. and went into the evening as more than 150 people mingled throughout the event, according to Christine Mullis of Mendocino College. While the main draw was the displays of private altars honoring family and friends that have passed away, event organizers also offered beverages, Mexican sweet bread and food free-of-charge. In addition, participants had the opportunity to design Mexican sugar skull candy and see the choreography of Mexican folkloric dances under the supervision of financial aid staff member Juvenal Vazquez.

Event organizers ? college staff, faculty and student ? said they decided to host D?a de los Muertos as a cultural event for students and faculty, as well as the community, Mullis stated. Guests experienced the Latino tradition of paying respect to family and friends who have passed through the celebration of life, she stated.

The cultural event was sponsored by the Associated Students of Mendocino College (ASMC). ASMC President Amethyst Raybee was a contributing force to the event, Mullis stated.

Among those who created altars were The City of Ten Thousand Buddha”s, Spanish instructor Maria Cetto”s class and instructor Sara Walsh”s English as a Second Language classes.

In addition, Alicia Mendoza and Minerva Flores organized the College Assistance Migrant Program students of Mendocino College to make altars, design sugar skull candy and help distribute “pan dulce” (sweet Mexican pastries) and beverages.

“Judging by the enthusiasm of the organizers, participants and guests, the first D?a de los Muertos event at Mendocino College was a huge success,” Mullis stated.
