LAKE COUNTY ? If a person encounters a downed power line, he or she should assume it is energized and extremely dangerous, according to county Public Information Officer Jill Ruzicka. A person should not touch or try to move it, and children and animals should be kept away.

Downed power lines can and should be reported by calling 9-1-1 and PG&E at 1-800-743-5002.

Candles should not be used during a power outage, Ruzicka stated. If necessary, use extreme caution. Candles should not, be used near drapes or under lampshades and should be kept away from small children.

If the power goes out, turn off or unplug all electrical appliances; otherwise, several appliances may come back on at once and overload circuits when the power is restored, Ruzicka stated. Hot appliances also pose a fire hazard if they come back one while a person is away or asleep.

A single lamp should be left on to show when power returns, Ruzicka. Appliences should be turned by on one at a time when conditions return to normal.

PG&E offers these suggestions to customers during power outages, Ruzicka stated.

Contact Ruzicka at 263-2580 or Jill.ruzicka@lakecountyca.gov with questions or concerns.
