LAKEPORT — The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) announced that Lakeport has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for 2013 on Oct. 22.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving more than 17,800 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA”s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.

The award recognizes “the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting,” according to a statement from the organization.

In order to receive the award, the city had to satisfy national guidelines for effective budget presentation.

The guidelines assess how a budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, as well as the 14 mandatory criteria within the categories, to receive the award.

Award recipients have shown efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an example for other governments throughout North America.

When a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is granted, a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for its having achieved the award.

The certificate has been presented to Finance Director Daniel Buffalo.

For budgets including fiscal period 2012, more than 1,340 groups or cities are expected to received the award.
