CASTRO VALLEY — Middletown High School wrestler Jessie Flynn not only won her weight division on Saturday during the Castro Valley Classic, but she beat the state”s top-ranked 189-pounder in the process, Danielle Pubill of San Francisco”s Sacred Heart Cathedral High School.

Pubill finished second in the state a year ago.

“I didn”t tell her about the state ranking until after the match, but I don”t think it would have mattered anyway,” Middletown coach Brian Hunt said. “Jessie has never been one to worry about her opponent. She simply goes out and works her moves and uses good, strong defense to counter whatever comes at her.”

Flynn beat Pubill 6-3 in the championship match.

As exciting as the end of Flynn”s day was, the beginning wasn”t bad either. In her first match Saturday she beat Danielle Wilson of Pittsburg 12-10 in overtime. Flynn then pinned Shelby Zarate of Selma in a minute, 45 seconds in the quarterfinals. She reached the finals by pinning Sarina Silva of Newark in 1:43.

Flynn is 7-0 on the season.

“It was a phenomenal day with Flynn,” Hunt said. “She was on fire. I”m in awe of what she accomplished.”

Four other Middletown wrestlers also took part in the tournament although only three competed. Sierra Egger went 2-2 at 116 pounds, Kailei Foltmer went 2-2 at 131 pounds, Tiyanna Meese went 1-2 at 126 pounds, and Rebecca Titus was unable to go at 101 pounds because of an injury.

Egger lost two close matches to North Coast Section opponents she will run into later this year, according to Hunt. Foltmer”s only two losses came to the fourth- and sixth-place finishers in her weight class.

“She is 6-4 on the season, which is great for her first year,” Hunt said of Foltmer.

Meese won her first match by pin, rallying from a late 7-6 deficit. She lost her next two matches, the final one to Faith Rodriguez of Kelseyville.
