OPINION: Letter to the Editor: New President?
By Dean Sparks — Why do we need a President? Can”t we get away from monarchism?
We go through all this bounce and swagger about being the global paragon of pantisocracy, then every four years we tuck our tail between our legs and give ourselves a Big Daddy, a single boss-man, a king there”s no way to protect from any little nobody shooting from any of a thousand indistinguishable windows as our emperor goes parading by.
I think it”s something that”s been slipped over on us by that old flimflammer, custom.
I think that unassailable executive I wished for in a letter some time back can be found in five parts, by which I mean five senators elected from among all the senators by the nation”s citizens or by all the members of Congress and charged with the presidential duties.
Their uneven number would prevent tie votes and their plurality would allow five heads instead of one, a tremendous advantage over one person trying to manage all the duties of leadership by himself.
If our nation can”t produce five executives who can work productively together we should look around the globe for another country that will come and take charge of ours.
