UPDATED:

During the past couple of weeks, while driving through county (and country) roads, I have noticed an alarming amount of garbage on the roadsides.

Plastic garbage bags are caught in tree branches or are clustered alongside bottles, cans, cardboard containers and drink cups.

Part of living in a rural area should be the enjoyment and appreciation of our natural environment, as one commutes for work or travels for pleasure.

It would benefit Lake County to have a clean-up day, where residents could volunteer to pitch in and make a difference, as well as educate those who might not realize how their habits harm wildlife and the natural beauty of our area.

Roads with limited or no shoulders could be closed for a portion of the day.

Another movement to consider is the elimination of plastic bags from local businesses.

This is successful in other areas; consumers bring in their re-useable bags or pay 10 cents for a paper bag. While paper is a product that requires resources to produce, one rarely sees paper bags clinging to brush or floating down a scenic waterway.
