LAKEPORT — Mendocino College will offer a “My Future, My Way” workshop Feb. 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Students from seventh to 12th grade in Lake and Mendocino counties are invited to the workshop, which is free-of-charge.
According to Lake County Office of Education Program Specialist Tammy Serpa, the workshop offers students the chance to learn about careers in culinary arts, criminal justice, music technology, chemistry, human services and business, with the goal of encouraging students to think about their futures.
“It is an opportunity for students to explore some careers and think about college,” Serpa said. “The definition of college has changed, it is no longer just a four-year university, it can be a two-year degree, a vocational college or a three-month program.”
“It is anything after high school,” Serpa added.
Additionally, the workshop will include a session on personal finance and scholarships, presented by Mendo Lake Credit Union, and an employment session, presented by WorkforceLake.
The event will also include a panel of college students from a variety of colleges.
“We”re pulling together recent graduates from Lake County to share what their experiences have been, how it has been different living out of the county and the differences between high school and college,” Serpa said.
A “Healthy Body, Healthy Mind” session will also be offered, during which students will choose from military fitness, Zumba or yoga.
Snacks, water, lunch, a canvas bag, notepad and pen will be included.
Transportation will be available to and from Lower Lake High School only. Students must be preregistered to take the bus.
Registration is limited to 100 students. Forms are available at each of the schools, by visiting www.surveymonkey.com/s/FM722V6 or by calling 994-9001.
