In Mr. Kettenhofen”s letter to the Editor on Feb. 11, he states that socialism cannot be Christian because it requires forced obedience. This is confusing to me. Is he suggesting that a Christian country should have no laws? No law against murder, theft, or drunk driving for instance.

They each require forced obedience. Is a Christian county supposed to rely entirely upon people behaving properly according to their own freewill? I think we all know where such a philosophy would take us. Not a place I would want to live.

Or is he suggesting that the laws that he approves of are OK, but not necessarily those he does not approve of. In reading my Bible I only see where Christ gave us two rules to live by. Love God with all your heart and mind, and your neighbor as yourself.

Now if we could come up with two laws that force obedience to that, what a wonderful world we would live in. However as that is impossible, this is an area in which we have to allow freewill.

In my 81 years of experience I have discovered that most people are good, if you just give them a chance. Laws are necessary for the few who are not. I cannot see how any laws, socialist or not, can be anti-Christian if they are for the good of our neighbors.
