I”ve been reading all the letters about problems sharing our county”s off-road trails. Hikers, bicyclists, horses and erosion, clashes and general inconsideration.

These are the same basic issues regarding boaters and swimmers on Clear Lake. While hiking is a top sport, so is swimming. Clear Lake used to be a huge venue for swimming.

Now, like hikers facing racing bicycles and dodging horse poop, swimmers (and kayakers) often face racing motorboats near shore (mostly bass boats capable of 70 mph), deadly fumes from these boats, the costs of installing five mph buoys at beaches and, even with a buoy, being blocked from a swim lane or returning to a beach by multiple boats, including fishing lines.

Then there”s the noise of bass tournaments-but, the point seems to be that our county needs to step in and mediate, mitigate and firmly regulate good sense and safety for all.
