CLEARLAKE — Highlands Senior Service Center (HSSC) and the Redwood Caregiver Resource Center will present a series of monthly training and support workshops for family members and professionals who are caregivers to older adults suffering from dementia, Alzheimer”s disease and related disorders. The series will be held at 1 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at HSSC.
The workshop on Tuesday will feature the video “Prescriptions for Caregivers: Take Care of Yourself.” The video discusses the common issues of guilt, resentment, feeling overwhelmed and obstacles to self-care. The discussion after the video will be about setting realistic expectations for the caregiver and the care-receiver, increasing emotional reserves through practical self-care and brainstorming realistic ways to prioritize self-care.
The workshop held May 20 will feature the video “A Thousand Tomorrows: Intimacy, Sexuality and Alzheimer”s.” The film follows couples dealing with the issue of changes in intimacy as dementia causes changes in roles. The discussion following the video will be about grief and loss, learning to redefine intimacy when sexual attraction and desire is diminished because of the caregiver”s blurred roles and the care-receiver”s dependency.
