MENDOCINO COLLEGE — Mendocino College and the Mendocino County Resource Conservation District (MCRCD) are holding a series of workshops to help households conserve water through the current drought. The second installment in the series will be held Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon in the Little Theater at Mendocino College.
Contractor Anna Birk?s will provide an in-depth presentation on the concept, value and process for catching and storing rainwater and some hands-on examples of rainwater catchment tactics. Design options will be discussed, with examples that can be easily installed at home.
“Most households can substantially reduce the amount of water they require from municipal systems by utilizing rainwater for household and garden use,” Joe Scriven, fisheries biologist for the MCRCD, said. “This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn from a local authority and to ask questions specific to your individual needs.”
The workshop series is part of the Mendocino Jumpstart Integrated Water Plan, a project that Mendocino College and the MCRCD are implementing to demonstrate water conservation strategies. Upcoming workshops include “Waterwise Gardening in a Drought” on May 17, “Greywater Systems” on June 14 and “Indoor Water Conservation” on July 12. Additional college classes and workshop opportunities will be available in the fall and next spring, including rainwater catchment, bioswale and xeric landscape, wetland and vernal pool, irrigation and sports field water efficiency.
The workshops are free-of-charge and open to the public. No pre-registration is required. Funding for the workshops comes from the California Department of Water Resources, Proposition 84.
