SACRAMENTO — Sean Johnson, Clear Lake High School graduate, has been chosen as the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) campaign director for the March of Dimes, March for Babies campaign.

Johnson will graduate from CSUS in May with a bachelor”s degree in communications, but not before taking on the role of campaign director for the March for Babies campaign, a cause that is close to his heart, Johnson stated.

“While I was stationed in North Carolina, my son Avery was born two months early,” Johnson said. “This is a great way for me to finally say ”thank you” to the doctors and nurses who saved my son”s life.”

The March of Dimes was founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1938 to combat polio. Eventually, the focus shifted to March for Babies, which provides education to expectant families, funds research about premature birth and provides support to families that have had to endure the trials of a premature birth, Johnson stated.

Led by CSUS President Alexander Gonzalez, Sacramento has set its fundraising goal at $200,000 by the April 26 walk at the California Capitol Building steps, Johnson stated.

Johnson leads a team of 58 students in a public relations program designed by communication professor Timothy Lent Howard.

This comes at the end of a 13-year journey that began on Sept. 11, 2001 when Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, he stated.

“In addition to serving my country, I joined for the educational benefits,” Johnson said. “After nine years of service and four years of school, I”m almost at the end.”
