SEBASTOPOL — The combined swim team from Kelseyville and Clear Lake high schools wrapped up its regular season with a meet against host Analy as well as visiting St. Helena on Thursday in Sebastopol.
Both the boys and girls lost to undefeated Analy squads. The Kelseyville-Clear Lake boys also lost to St. Helena, but the girls” squad edged a powerful St. Helena team.
“We were surprised,” Kelseyville-Clear Lake head coach Agustin Merodio said. “The St. Helena swim team is quite a bit bigger than we are and we have never beaten them in competition. However, the girls took the lead about halfway through the meet and never looked back. This is a very strong and aggressive girls” team and we are excited to be heading into championships.”
The Kelseyville-Clear Lake girls wrap up the dual-meet season at 6-4 while the boys finish 3-7.
“This is the first time that one of our teams ended their season with a majority of wins,” Merodio said.
Winners for the girls against St. Helena were Lauren Rudnick in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 butterfly; Liz Fricker in the 50 freestyle; Kim English in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke; and the 4×100 relay team of Rudnick, English, Allison Hanson and Sarah Merodio.
For the boys, Owen Lawler scored a first in the 100 breaststroke.
The Kelseyville-Clear Lake squad will spend the next two weeks focusing on the league championship meet scheduled for May 8-9. Also coming up for the team is a pancake breakfast fundraiser sponsored by the Kelseyville Lions Club on May 11 (Mother”s Day) from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Kelseyville Lions Club. All mothers attending receive carnations.
